Your Bible is a mirror that shows you what you really look like in God’s eyes: ‘Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.’ (James 1:23-24 NIV)
Often when the word ‘man’ is used in the Bible it is a lazy translation of a word that includes both men and women – but not here. This word ‘man’ is the Greek word for a male, so we’re talking about the way men use the mirror. Generally, men glance just long enough to get the basics done – then they’re gone. But not women. They can be so keen on knowing how they look that they carry a mirror around! So, if the Bible is like a mirror showing us our true selves, we should approach it like a woman – not a man. We need to gaze into it again and again until we have fully seen who we are in God’s eyes.
You see God wants us to get real with ourselves so that we can make whatever adjustments are necessary. James continues: ‘…if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it’ (James 1:25 NLT). In what area of your character do think still need a lift? Give yourself a makeover by being a ‘doer’ of what God says instead of just a ‘hearer’!
