What your speech says about you

You can hide who you are by changing your address, clothes and name. But how you speak will give you away every time. It happened to Peter. After Peter said he didn’t know Jesus twice, people said to him ‘”…you are one of them…your speech shows it”‘ (Mark 14:67-70 NKJV). So, to convince them that he wasn’t a friend of Jesus, Peter ‘Began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!”‘ (Mark 14:71 NKJV). And it worked! With a mouth like that no one accused him of knowing Jesus again. Using bad language in any setting will make people question the quality of your relationship with Jesus.

Swearing is becoming more and more common amongst Christian young people and youth groups. People use arguments like ‘it doesn’t matter that much’ or ‘it stops people from thinking we’re geeks’. The bad news is, they’re the world’s worst arguments! You will be judged on your language by other people and swearing in front of non-Christians won’t make them think you’re a ‘cool’ Christian, they’ll just think you’re a trashy Christian.

Paul says, ‘Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up…that it may benefit those who listen’ (Ephesians 4:29 NIV). If you want to win people to Jesus, start with how you talk. Words are powerful things. They either build up or tear down, add to or take from. It’s not important that people can tell from your accent where you’re from, but when they can’t tell by the way you talk that you know Jesus, something’s seriously wrong.
