Dirty Dishes

Paul writes to his friend Titus, ‘…He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit’. He is reminding this young guy whom he calls, ‘…my true son in our common faith…’ (Titus 1:4 NIV) of what things were like before he met Jesus, and then pointing out the amazing new life he has.

Now then, if you’ve ever had your dinner and then left the dirty plate overnight until the food has dried on, you’ll know those dishes need to soak in some hot, soapy water so that all the crusty stains can be removed. Well, in the same way we need to soak our minds in God’s Word until the dirty stains that James calls ‘…all the filth and evil in your lives…’ (James 1:21 NLT) begins to melt away. And we don’t have to do this just for ‘mega-sin’, but also for hardened attitudes that keep us from growing in grace. Now this doesn’t happen by just grabbing a Bible verse here and there. No, it calls for soaking yourself in the Scriptures until the Holy Spirit connects with your spirit and brings out the shine of Jesus in you.

As a new creation you have been created to please God. It’s a bit like the way that a calculator is programmed to compute numbers. All you have to do is feed a calculator the right information to get the right answer. And you have been designed to do the right thing when you are fed with the Word of God. That’s why it’s so important to spend time in God’s Word. So get your Bible out today!
